La Canada Flintridge families are served by a number of exceptional public, private and parochial schools. Residents have maintained a long tradition of providing the highest quality schools for their children, dating back to 1885. The La Cañada Unified School District, which is consistently among California’s top five percent of schools, includes a high school, a middle school and three elementary schools.

With La Cañada having about 300 sunny days a year and a median year-round climate of around 64 degrees, outdoor activities are very popular. Nearby is the entrance to the 694,000 acre Angeles National Forest. The forest offers year-round opportunities for camping, hiking, skiing, swimming, boating, picnicking and sightseeing. Over 500 miles of forest trails lead hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and off-highway vehicle riders across rugged backcountry, along high, scenic ridges, and through shady, tree-lined canyons. The city also has five parks and hosts the beautiful Descanso Gardens, the perfect place to have lunch and spend the afternoon.

La Cañada is a family oriented community with almost 50 percent of the city living with more than three people in each home. The architecture of the homes in La Cañada range from modern mansions to Spanish style cottages. There is certainly a home for you in this beautiful city.

HISTORY

In 1769 Spanish missionaries, including Father Serra, arrived in the Valley areas with military guards. When one of the guards, Jose Verdugo, retired, he was granted permission to graze cattle if he did not interfere with the Indians or the missions. He named his property Rancho San Rafael.The Rancho included most of present day Glendale, Burbank, Eagle Rock and Highland Park, extending north from the intersection area where the 110 freeway and the 5 freeway now meet and continuing “to the mountains”.

In the 1820s the Mexican Revolution removed Spanish rule from California. The isolated valley near the mountains was reported as “unoccupied and unused” by Mexican officials and was granted to a Mexican schoolteacher from Los Angeles, Ignacio Coronel. He named it Rancho La Cañada. Its southern boundary was near Freeway 134 from the Eagle Rock west to what is now Glendale Avenue. During the Mexican War (1847) he abandoned the ranch and later sold it. In 1858 Julio Verdugo finally acquired Rancho La Cañada by trading what is now Burbank for it. Julio moved its southern boundary north up to where Honolulu Avenue is now in Montrose.

One of the first settlers, Colonel Theodore Pickenssettled on a homestead in the foothills north of Rancho La Cañada in 1871. Pickens’ cabin was on what is now called “Briggs Terrace” at the top of Briggs Avenue.

In 1875 the 5830 acres of Rancho La Cañada was sold for $10,000 to two healthseekers from Michigan, Dr. Jacob Lanterman, a dentist, and Colonel Adolphus Williams, a Civil War Veteran. They hoped to subdivide it and sell lots to support their families. Dr. Lanterman built a house he called “Homewood” which still stands near the Church of the Lighted Window. Col. Williams built a house, which was removed in the 1950s to build Lanterman Auditorium.

Prior to the city’s incorporation in 1976, the area consisted of two distinct communities, La Cañada and Flintridge (the latter named after developer Frank P. Flint). Flintridge comprises the southern part of the city, covering the northern flank of the San Rafael Hills, but more generally including most areas south of Foothill Blvd. The eastern part of the city, even north of Foothill Blvd., was also originally considered Flintridge and is still home to the Flintridge Riding Club and Flintridge Preparatory School. Reference to the entire city is often shortened to just ‘La Cañada’ but seldom to just ‘Flintridge’. The full city name specifically does not have a hyphen in it, to illustrate unity between the communities that were once separately known as La Cañada and Flintridge.
