Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock is a small community nestled under the San Gabriel mountains just west of Pasadena. It has a diverse population of about 24,000, living in mostly single family residences. The town gets its name from a large boulder at the north edge of the neighborhood which casts a bird-shaped shadow at certain times of the day. Eagle Rock was named in the 2013 and 2014 Top 10 Hottest Neighborhoods in the United States list from Redfin.

Artists, writers, filmmakers and other creative types have long been attracted to Eagle Rock, which the LA Times has called “cozy” and “hip” and local magazines say has an “understated boho-chic vibe”. Frequently used as a location for Hollywood movies and commercials, Eagle Rock is also home to Occidental College, one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. Eagle Rock is brimming with eclectic shops, art galleries, wine bars, independent coffee houses and top restaurants within walking distance from local neighborhoods, yet only minutes from the freeway and all surrounding L.A. areas.

There is no shortage of great places to eat in Eagle Rock, many of which have been featured on the Food Network. Auntie Em’s Kitchen has great breakfast (Bobby Flay did a throwdown with its cupcakes) and Camilo’s is famous for the bread pudding French toast. The Oinkster is a popular place for BBQ Pulled Pork or pastrami sandwiches was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. Want vegetarian? Try Fatty’s. Casa Bianca is popular with pizza lovers and Eagle Rock Italian Bakery is a great stop for pastries and sandwiches. For more international fare, try sashimi from Mia Sushi, Mediterranean doner kebabs from Spitz or Vietnamese at the Blue Hen.

There are many options for evening entertainment too. The Colorado Wine Company offers popular wine tastings, enjoy the jazz club at Columbo’s, or join the local college kids at the Black Boar. On Friday come out to the Eagle Rock Farmers Market from 5 pm – 8:30 pm.

Eagle Rock is a great destination for art and music lovers. In October, Colorado Boulevard shuts down for the Eagle Rock Music Festival. The Eagle Rock Center for the Arts has Sunday evening concerts, art camps, photography/visual art exhibits, and art auctions. There are several art galleries to visit in the neighborhood including Cactus, Carlotta’s Passion, Jose Vera’s and Toros Pottery.

In addition to enjoying the beautiful grounds of Occidental College, Eagle Rock residents can get a Facility Pass, which allows use of the Alumni Gymnasium Fitness Center, Patterson Field, Henry Track, McKinnon Tennis Center, Taylor Pool, and Rush Gymnasium.

Eagle Rock is a family-friendly community that enjoys the reputation for having good schools. Eagle Rock Elementary is a Blue Ribbon school and Dahlia Heights Elementary is considered “a jewel in the crown of LAUSD”. Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High is an International Baccalaureate School with a magnet program serving gifted and high ability students. Renaissance Arts Academy is a public charter school available as another option to families. One of the Los Angeles area’s hidden treasures, Eagle Rock offers both the benefits of an intimate community and the convenience of easy access to the surrounding urban, mountain and beach activities. Residents enjoy a small town feel where neighbors say hello to each other while walking or riding their bikes and take pride in their friendly neighborhood.
